fabric collage with handmade bird

I really loved Nicole's post about fabric collages using embroidery hoops.  A stretched piece of fabric is a lovely backdrop to sew all sorts of things to, including little soft sculptures.  I made one of these using a large embroidery hoop when I was working on my book proposal. Part of the proposal process is creating a sample project with step-by-step photos and instructions.  That was the project I used and it was really fun to make. It got me pretty far, and I liked it so much that it will be included in my book.

Reading Nicole's post made me want to make another fabric collage.  I find it to be a very free process. I look around for scraps of this and that and arrange them as a backdrop for a little sewn bird. The tangles of thread look like nesting materials to me, and the little white buttons like eggs.  The hoop is 3.5" x 5.5".  The collage is now in my Etsy shop. I find it is very hard to make things for the shop while making things for the book, but I think every so often a little something will find its way there.

The fabric on the wings reminds me so very much of the upholstery fabric on a recliner chair we had growing up, both the color and the striping. I am smitten with this collage idea–lovely!

I just now got the chance to catch up with your posts on your book-related trip. It was really interesting to read about all that goes into the making of a lovely book. I’m so excited for yours to come out. And this collage project is beautiful. I always enjoy seeing your work when you depart a bit from what I already know (and love).

p.s. i made some collages on hoops for an exhibit at gallery hanahou earlier this year, and this post made me remember how much i enjoyed doing them. might do some more if i can find the time this week. thank you for the dash of inspiration, abby.

I don’t know what to say except that I think it’s extraordinary! Great way to use up all those scraps.

I’ve just seen the article about you in cloth, paper, scissors – I love your work and will be checking your etsy shop. am excited to be doing a doll workshop in November but am a little nervous about what supplies to take. Any suggestions would be gratefully received!
