I worked on a seahorse today. Playing around with making pleated fabric after reading and rereading The Art of Manipulating Fabric by Colette Wolff. That book never ceases to amaze me. The amount of work it took to put it together! It is so comprehensive and whenever I pick it up all kinds of applications for her techniques begin to occur to me. I love books like that. The pleats give the seahorse texture in rows which is pretty cool.
I had this fabric leftover from bird making. It is super tightly woven and really thin and durable. What do they call this kind of quilting cotton? Hand dye? It is great for making soft toys. And I thought it was appropriately seahorse in color. I added some seed beads above and below each pleat. Taking this photo it occured to me that some seaweed, or an anemone would be awesome in this scene.
ahh.. I love it. The pleats are a great idea. 🙂
The fabric looks like it could be a Batik. Very cute!
yes, batik.
Lovely seahorse! Cute little scene! It sure is fun setting it all up, isn’t it?
Is it my imagination or is miss pink fishy looking a tad put out because the new kid in the sea has such a self-confident air? Perhaps I should try embellishing me with seed beads and see if heads turn!
A. It’s awesome. B. Why haven’t you made a jelly fish yet? 😉
Wow! Great seahorse! I love the addition of the beads!
Seahorses are one of my favourite creatures. Yours is lovely.

Hi! ‘The Art of Manipulating Fabric’ is a great book – one of my favourites too. I have JUST received a copy of ‘The Artful Bird’ and want to say what a really well done book it is – so clear and sooooo inviting. Excellent, really excellent. Gilly
Hi Abby Jane! Your seahorse is great – it’s a lovely creation! It’s amazing that I was busy doing the same thing at the same time, on the other side of the globe!
So I’ve added a link to your blog..
May I invite you to see mine?
Hi Noga, That’s so funny! I love the pocket on your seahorse. And I love you method of making bird’s beaks!
Beautiful! what a graceful animal that is still kind of whimsical and silly. If you make fabric anemone, please post a picture. I wanted to make some felt anemone for my daughter to take to school. She’s very enamored with a song about it right now…”Anemone, anemone, flower-animal of the sea…”
Thank you! I plan to put a little seahorse in this pocket 😉
These are adorable!
I LOVE your sea horse.
And thank you so much for the link to Manipulating Fabrics. Definitely a must have book.
You’re very talented.
