We had a nice weekend over here. Great weather and so productive. The main activity was getting the big girl bed set up which meant disassembling the crib and reassembling it in Simon’s room. This process was very frustrating and more time consuming than we would have liked. The crib suffered a few dings and is a bit worse for the wear.
We assembled Roxanne’s big girl bed – a vintage Heywood Wakefield full-sized bed that matches her Hey Wake dresser (she’s so mid-century modern). Once it was all put together we realized that the mattress we were planning to use (a mattress my dad bought me when I was single) was, as we had feared, way to thick (16″!) and looked ridiculous. So Roxy took her nap in the Pack ‘n Play and Charlie went out and bought a 6.5″ futon mattress. Problem solved.
Here she is, under her starfish sheets holding her starfish toy (“It’s made from daddy’s neckties!”).
She couldn’t be any happier. Begging to take a nap. Tucking starfish in and curling up with him in a loving embrace. So far, she hasn’t tried to get out. Keep your fingers crossed.

Now her nursery really does look black and white and red and it looks super. For those of you who were reading this blog through those long months when I was trying to make myself finish the darn bumper I want you to know that it was worth it. I love the text on it. I love that it’s black and white.
In other news, I got a bit of money for my birthday and decided to break down and buy a few much needed sewing supplies. I’ve only ever had one presser foot for my machine. I’ve never even sewn with anything but a basic foot, but I recently I had begun to covet some of the fancy feet (fancy feet!). So I bought a walking foot and a free motion foot.
I have yet to install either, but I’ll let you know. I’m especially excited about the free motion foot. Now I can drop the feed dogs and do some free motion stitching (I just love talking about the feed dogs). Also, I bought some long doll needles for attaching heads and limbs to bodies.
Finally, some mail happiness. A lovely package from Bekka arrived. We were partners for the vintage button swap. Not only did I get some lovely vintage buttons, but all sorts of other amazing things. She knitted Simon a sweater. I know. Wow. And made Roxanne an adorable little black bunny. Plus lots of other goodies for me. Thank you, Bekka!

My poor husband has dealt with the stress of crib tear-down and set-up many times…they really need to make it easier! The bumper looks great! And what a lovely parcel of goodies!
Buy yourself 20 new bobbins for your birthday too- you will be a happier crafter! I promise!

I still have yet to make a new bumper for my baby’s crib – what kind of stuffing did you use for yours? I like how it’s so fluffy and full.
I LOVE that bumper..I’ve seen two of them floating around blogland lately which is getting me inspired, especially since my oldest just ripped the ties off of the current one by climbing into the crib with my youngest…
I’m looking forward to another transition in to the big girl bed for my youngest…soon. very soon. she’s asks for one every night. I can’t wait to see those little legs tucked into a bed!

What is a walking foot?
My feed dogs don’t drop, I have a face plate that covers them up. I tried it out once while doing applique and it did not work well for me. I don’t remember if I was using a free-motion foot with it, but oh well, either way I probably need the help spacing the satic stitch.
