under gussets

The new dog pattern is working out really well. It turned out that the head gusset on the first prototype was fine, it was the under gusset that was the problem – it was a bit too wide so he ended up doing the splits. I fixed that and also set a better order in which to sew his parts together. Doing the head and under gussets first and then the rest of him seems to work best.

Has anyone else noticed that not all polyfills are created equal? Some of the bags I buy are squishy while others are, well, crunchy. Crunchy like cotton balls. I do like that crunchy kind, but it doesn’t seemed to be marked as any different than the squishy kind. Am I crazy here or has anyone else noticed this? How do I find more bags of the crunchy?

Other dogs are in the works, this time with patterned fabric.

    I like your descriptions- crunchy and squishy. I call them dry and oily- I like dry. The “oily” and what I figure you are describing as squishy, is always squishable, never gets really firm. Good for somethings I guess, although I haven’t discovered anything I like to use it for. When I go to Joann’s or someplace that sells stuffing, I notice holes in the bags where someone has stuck a finger in to check the feel, so I guess everyone is confused. My recommendation is to figure out a brand you like and then stick to it. Then you know what to expect. I use Buffalo Batt- Superfluff (I know, very silly name). I think it is very similar to wool, in the way it packs and feels in the finished object.

    C-UTE! I was working on a cow pattern, but have given up for the moment. (I don’t think “cow” translates to calico very well.) But your puppy is just perfect!

    i use the airtex stuffing which is super slick and squishy. it has to do with the way the fibers are combed when they are making the stuffing. either they combed to be smooth (so the fibers slide past eachother) or rough (so they lock together). you are not crazy at all!
    p.s. the puppy is very cute!

    nice doggie! I’ve found the same thing with the polyfil – I end up using the crunchy for filling tails, paws and ears, and the squishy for the rest of the toy. It’s not weird to squeeze the bags before you buy ;o) *grins*
