Studio Update

March 11, 2015

I have a few interesting things from the studio to share today.

Mollie Makes 51

First, I have a project in the new issue of Mollie Makes (#51). At Thanksgiving an editor there emailed me asking if I might rework the flying squirrel pattern I designed for Wild Olive to create a clothes pin bag for laundry day. I added some interfacing to stiffen things up a bit, a pocket for the clothespins, and a loop at the top of his head for hanging.

This was a fun project to work on and it’s in a magazine that I truly love. The opportunity came out of publishing a free pattern on someone else’s site. Get the issue here or in your local craft shop.

I contributed a pattern to a new book that just came out called Fat Quarters: Small Fabrics, More than 50 Big Ideas. My project is a plush wormy apple and I’m so pleased that it’s on the cover! This book is packed with cute projects. I love that patchwork basket on the cover designed by Maureen Cracknell.

I was a guest on the CraftSanity podcast last week. CraftSanity is one of the oldest craft focused podcasts. The host, Jennifer Ackerman-Haywood, started making it in 2006 when podcasts were truly new on the scene. I’ve listened to nearly every episode and especially like to go back and hear interviews with designers who were still at an early stage of their careers. Try this one with Denyse Schmidt from 2006, this one with Emily Martin of The Black Apple from 2008, or this one from 2007 with Amanda Soule of Soulemama. Jennifer has documented the modern craft movement through her show and that’s so valuable.

I’ve been on CraftSanity before (episode #100 and #123). This time we’re talking about ebooks, craft publishing, Etsy, and what it takes to blog for 10 years. Tune in.

Bossy Biz Tip

And finally, I’ve written a few guest posts about the value of email newsletters. The first is on Academy of Handmade and the second on social media consultant Cailtlin Bacher’s blog, Little Farm Media.

Oh wait, one more thing! I was thrilled to learn that the people at Joann’s sewed up my Head to Tail Bags pattern (available as PDF or in paper as Simplicity #1386) and used the samples in their national sales flyer thisĀ  Sunday. Fun!
