Caterpillar and Butterfly: A Reversible Toy!

April 3, 2012

Plush catepillar
Once I started thinking about reversible toys I couldn't stop! The next most obvious transformation, after the chick and egg, was a caterpillar and butterfly. So here we go! I present you with this happy green caterpillar that you can turn inside out and it reverses to a butterfly!

Catepillar

Like the chick and egg, this toy is made from scraps of fleece and bits of felt. I came up with a nifty way to overlay sparkly organza on the wings to make my 8 year old squeal with delight.

The pattern is underway. It's been amazing to see the success of the chick and egg pattern in my Craftsy pattern shop and my store on Etsy. I think reversible toys are very clever and I love that, "Oh wow!" moment the first time you turn one inside out the reveal the hidden creature inside. I hope you like them, too!

**The pattern is now up in my Craftsy pattern shop. Thank you!

Very cute! I have always wanted to explore the reversible idea. I am a sucker for this kind of “clever”. Susan Anderson has a knitting book called Itty Bitty Toys with several reversible knitted (of course) toys. Since then I have been itching to make some sewn versions and have a few in my sketchbook. Good for you for making the time to do it!

These toys are so absolutely beautiful, creative and fun! You have a gift for figuring out how to put fabrics and shapes together with a little love to create something magical! Yea Abby!

You might very well be a genius… a toy making genius… this is awesome!
If you can make a tadpole, and actually make something like that cute haha, and pull a frog out of it… I’d be super impressed… but I already am 🙂

Oh my! The chick and egg were cute enough, but this is totally up my alley! Although, I’m with Tiffany on the tadpole and frog… I’d be making a whole pond-full of those!

These reversible patterns are really clever – fun to play with and to teach kids a little education too I think.

That is so adorable and so clever, I have nephews that are *real* boys, otherwise Id’ be getting your pattern to make them one, I do think it was inconsiderate of my sister to have twin boys, she could at least have had one girl for me to make pretties for!
