in the studio today

October 28, 2011

I'm home in my studio this morning.  Here are a few glimpses of where I work.

DSC_0024
This is the far corner of the room where my ironing board lives. I use my ironing board as a cutting table because I only cut little pieces of fabric at a time. I have a crappy Rowenta iron that leaks all over the floor every time you fill it with water.

On my desk this morning are two sets of pattern templates that I'm working on.  And under the eave is my new Janome.  His name is Gnomey and we've become friends even though his automatic needle threader broke the first week I had him. I forgive him.

On the floor is a pile of quilting cotton I just picked for the project that will be chapter 12. Red is my favorite color.

Wool felt galore. This is only a small percentage of the total wool felt collection. And I save every single scrap. You never know!  A tiny scrap of just the right color could become the most perfect pair of eyeballs.

Hot pink novelty fur! Yes!

At the end of every project all the scraps on the floor (except for the wool felt) go in here. The kids raid this bin daily.

Under this eave are books and supplies like glue and dye and other random stuff I've been hording for years.

This corner of my desk has all the markers and pencils and beads. Speakers and a clock. And on the bulletin board is a sewing pattern for making a pillow that Roxanne made for me in Kindergarten.

In the corner I have the two big umbrella lights and the tripod set up with a table where I take all the step-by-step photos. And, on the other side of the room, is our bed! It used to be that I worked at a table in the corner of our bedroom, but now it feels more like we sleep in a corner of my studio.

Well, thank you for coming over for a visit!

I love seeing other people’s studio spaces–thanks for sharing. Also, I save every last scrap of wool felt too–it’s true, you never know what you might be able to use the tiny bits for!

Thanks for the tour! I think we have the same iron. I just use a spray bottle now, and have given up ever putting water in the iron. I do get cheerful when it falls off the board, hoping it will be well a thoroughly broken so I can get rid of it, but so far it has kept working.

Dear Abby, that was fun reading. I love your posts. You and I are very much alike. I save EVERY scrap (for the same reasons as you), and my favorite color is also red. I made your circle bird and it turned out looking like a chick because I used all yellow! I think it turned out pretty cute. Looking forward to more from you. I’d attach a picture, but don’t know how to attach one here.
