I’m a little penguin

May 9, 2005

Well, I’ve finished my first creation from a Japanese craft book. Considering that the directions were all in Japanese, I think he has turned out okay. Roxy is really obsessed with “guins” so I chose the penguin to make first. I find that I learn a lot each time I make something new. I like the way that his appendages are sewn inside his body and then turned inside out. It makes a tidy seam and I am thinking of making a new owl now using this technique to attach its feet.

Here are some thank you notes I created a while back. I like to make greeting cards for a lot of reasons. First, they are like small, unintimidating canvases. I can make one start to finish in about a half hour.

Second, a handmade greeting card is like a tiny, ephemeral piece of art that you give to someone. They look at it, they admire it, maybe they put it up on the mantel for a few days, and then they throw it away.

Third, greeting cards serve a purpose. You HAVE to attach a card to presents – there is a need for them. I have serious issues with creating art for no reason. That is why I’m more of a crafter – I can get into making art if it’s art with a purpose.

Cool penguin. I like your owls, too. The fabrics are beautiful.
