Today is Roxanne's first day of Kindergarten. I feel like this is the beginning of such a long and complex journey through what we hope will be at least a decade and a half of formal schooling. Teachers and homework, gossip and friendships, successes and heartaches, and everything else that comes with being in school. The creeping self-awareness that we might not be the very best at everything we do coupled with the incredible excitement of mastering challenging material. And today the journey down this path has begun for my first baby, the one who was 4 lbs. and cried and nursed nearly constantly through her first months. The one who never crawled and only wanted to go to the playground when no one else was there. The one who grew into a two-year-old that would cry and scream for over an hour at a time nearly every day. But after two years of physical therapy and occupational therapy and social coaching is now on an even keel and is ready to show the world all she's got: an amazing memory, a hysterical sense of humor, the vocabulary of an adult, and a knowledge of history (both world and American) that could rival most high schoolers. We both cried this morning as she lined up to walk in with her class, but I know she is an incredible kid and I think she knows it, too.

Best wishes for you and Roxanne on this new adventure! I’m excited that the girls will be in religious school together – can’t believe that six years after meeting in a sukkah, our daughters will be off to school together!

While I do not know your daughter’s diagnosis, I had a challenging experience with my first born (of six) as well. My son cried for hours until he was 2.5 yrs. My mother told me that he wanted to talk, and she was right. He was a great kid to raise. He loved school and did well. Today he is an optometrist. He continues to be a good son, and has a great marriage and three wonderful kids. I am convinced that infants that cry, in the end, are very intelligent great kids. Then again, I could be very biased. 🙂
