I just finished this hexie doll quilt. I continue to love English Paper Piecing because it’s all done by hand which means it’s totally portable. I sewed this while watching my kids play on the weekends and while relaxing in the evenings. I took it along on a car ride to Connecticut a few weeks ago.
Every hexie is different (except for the creamy white ones) and they are a mix of vintage, Japanese and new fabrics. I’m kinda loving the rainbow effect.
The back is a vintage cheater print and it’s bound in light purple Kona cotton. (I love this video for quick and easy quilt binding.)
I started making this quilt when I was designing my new Asleep Awake Doll pattern. I had all of my small scale prints out and found it hard to put them away without making another something. Now I can tuck the dolls in!
The Asleep Awake Doll pattern is on sale for just a few more days (sale ends February 11). A doll plus a little doll quilt would make the sweetest gift. Even my 9-year-old’s eyes lit up when she saw this. Although she feels she’s too old to play with the doll bed now she said, “I’ll just borrow it for a little while,” and scurried off.
Abby, I love the subtle rainbow cascade of the colors. It looks like it was meant to be covering up your dolls! I need to remember that as a gift for my nieces.
Thank you. I sat and played with all the hexies and decided a subtle rainbow was best. It was so fun to layout. I’m kinda addicted to making doll quilts now!
This is beautiful!
I love the hexies and rainbow colors – so cheerful! A doll quilt is a good idea too for hexies as it doesn’t take as long to complete or quilt :).
Totally. Now I want to make one with small hexies. It will take longer, but I think it’s still manageable with a doll quilt.
Abby—It put a big smile on my face, seeing you make a quilt. It’s delightful. (Maybe one day I’ll make a little doll!) PB
Go for it! I’m not much of a quilter and I do live in fear of the quilt police because I don’t like cutting things in straight lines, but EPP is great because you don’t have to.
Love the little doll quilt! I’m loving hand work more and more. It is so nurturing.
I really like your blog. Your information hits many angles and is very useful.
Thank you so much! I agree that handwork is pretty great.
Oh, that is such a cute quilt. I have done many kinds of quilting, but I haven’t done EPP yet. I am signed up to do a sampler and EPP is included in it, so I will be giving it a try. I have no granddaughters so I haven’t done a doll quilt in a long time. Somewhere in my stash I have a cheater fabric with lots of triangles.
What a lovely quilt for the dolls. I LOVE your daughter’s reaction!
Love the quilt colors! I did an EPP hexie quilt for my grandson and loved choosing the colors, making the heroes and the overall look, but when it came to quilting it, I was in a hurry (read late) and machine quilted it on my regular sewing machine. I should have persevered and done the whole thing by hand, but it is so time consuming. How did you quilt yours?
By machine. I’m totally okay with compromise!
Abby, I look forward to every publication of your newsletter/blog; I ALWAYS find something that peaks my interest and I ALWAYS learn something new. Thank you!
My grandson, Oliver, is going to be a big brother in April, so I purchased a vintage baby doll cradle & handmade doll for him. I’d love to know where I can find a pattern or how-to information on your quilt. Thanks in advance.
Hi Mary, Thank you so much. There isn’t a pattern for this quilt. It’s just English Paper Piece hexagons. To learn English Paper Piecing I recommend Diane’s YouTube videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLyr0RGJfvPBwYkrF924wzgftmDdlbll0
Thank you, Abby. I will certainly check out the video 🙂
I’m teaching my daughter how to sew and she’d love to see this! 🙂 Thanks
