a gull and David Small

February 18, 2010

I finished a white gull this morning while the kids were at vacation week nature camp.

I will bring this to my meeting with Mass Audubon in a few weeks.

I enjoyed flying it around the house while taking its picture.  Very fun to play with.

Last week I got a PDF of the front and back cover of my book, plus two inside pages.  Oh my. It looks really cool, and I am beginning to realize that this is really going to happen.  The release date is officially January 2011.  That seem so far off.  This whole process really is reminiscent of having a baby.

I made a new blog banner that I am happy with.  Stella and pink kitty napping.  I'm not sure if anyone clicks over to the blog much, but in case you happen to come out your reader you can see it.

Around here, the kids and I have been enjoying some books by David Small. Our favorite might be Imogene's Antlers, but Stella really likes Eulalie in Eulalie and the Hopping Head.  Such a weird book, but really good. I like Paper John best (I have a soft spot for books that involve crafting). We also liked Fenwick's Suit. My  mom pointed out an article not long ago in the New York Times about David Small, that's how we learned about him.  He's a storyteller, and great illustrator, too.  He illustrated one of Roxanne's favorite books, So You Want to Be President. Anyway, check him out.

I’m always amused by When Dinosaurs came With Everything.
Other favorite illustrators: Peggy Rathman in The Day the Babies Crawled Away (it may inspire your girls to do some scherrenschnitte) and Marlee Frazer (check out The Seven Silly Eaters).

It’s been a little while that I visited your blog and I didn’t know you had a book coming. 🙂 I can’t wait for it’s realease in 2011!
I adore so much what you are doing. It’s so different and beautiful. You inspire me to start doing plush toys, as well. 🙂
Thank you for all the inspiration!

I, too, have loved David Small’s books. Then I discovered the books his wife wrote and he illustrated. I now own all of them. AND I own Seven Silly Eaters by Mary Ann Hoberman and illustrated by Marla Frazee. The world of children’s books is a delicious adventure. I hope you and Stella enjoy your journey in that world immensely.

Taking note of all these book titles for when I can enjoy them with my five-month-old. And I think I’ve told you before but I figure I’ll go say it again, Abby: I am so impatient for your book to come out so I can get a copy!
