work

March 9, 2010

There have been just a few times since I started this blog five years ago in which my sewing work has taken me out of my home.  Most of the time it's just me, sitting upstairs in our bedroom with my headphones on, sewing for hours a day alone.  My interactions with people about what I'm making take place primarily here, online.

But there have been a few times in which my sewing has taken me places, like Georgia and New Hampshire to install shows or attend openings of my shows. Or to meet up with blog friends who live nearby and have become real friends. Or to Colorado for the photo shoot for my book.

Yesterday was a day in which my sewing took me out, which was pretty cool.  I met with the folks who run Mass Audubon's Visual Art center in Canton, MA in the  morning. I took a basket of birds with me and we chatted about possible ways to work together. It was a thoughtful meeting and I am hopeful that something will come from it down the road.

And then, after lunch, I had a meeting here in town, with the owner of a wonderful shop. We are planning a show and an opening party/book launch in January. I think it will be just the right venue and I can't wait to finally show my work here, in Wellesley, and to celebrate the book and the birds with my friends.

For the first time I went to nursery school drop-off in dress slacks and heels and headed somewhere to meet with grown-ups to talk about work stuff. Pretty cool.

We did our taxes the other day. It was surprising to see that there is actually income from my sewing. I don't think I expected that. It's like a tiny little business now. I felt pretty proud to see that bottom line.

And last night I finished two more of these little assemblages.

A good thing to work on after a day out and once I start on them, I can't stop at just one.

They are, of course, in my shop now.

Thank you so much! It is interesting and satisfying. I think it would be great to do some teaching, too, which was my career before all this art and craft began!
