These three elephants, along with two more yet to be made, will go to Pajama Squid, a new children’s store opening up in Takoma Park, Maryland, in March. (See photos of each one individually here.)
I grew up in Potomac, Maryland, and it is nice to have a little representation there. I have some more plans for the elephant pattern so more elephants are sure to be made down the line.
I must confess, though, that I have grown to really hate making toys! What’s happened to me? They just make me so grumpy. Ack.
Well you became an artist. Msaybe you could just develop and sell the patterns? That way you could do the fun part without the factoryessembling. (ANd I for one would love me a pattern of yours.. )
It would be sad to hear that you are sick of making……you have just moved on .
I like the previous comment, make patterns for those of us who enjoy it and it is an easy stress free way to keep yourself in fabric for the things you want to make……please?

I’ll chime in- feeling grumpy is your heart telling you that you don’t want to do it. Artistically, you have grown and moved on in the past year- embrace it! I try to remind myself- if I’m do it for the money, I’ve chosen the wrong profession 🙂

I understand what you mean! People keep ordering really complex applique pieces, and I am starting to really dislike working on them. Now that my side-project of ambigram is picking up, I am cosidering dropping that patchwork clothing all together & using that time for the random projects I dream up & have no time for.
It is sad though, to make the transition, and to feel like you are letting down the fans of your previous work. But often the burden of creativity pushes us in a completely different direction.
I agree whole heartedly with the artistic approach. just make what you want!
p.s. i’m excited to see your work in person at magpie, though, even if they are ‘toys.’ 😉

Perhaps you don’t hate making toys so much as you hate making more than one? I know for myself I am ready to move on to something new as soon as I’ve almost finished whatever it is I’m working on. The elephants are adorable!!
It’s been so interesting to me to watch your progression over the last year. I love the approach that you’ve been taking in your work – the use of collage, incorporating various 3-D objects, the presence of canvases that act as background but don’t confine your work… I can see why, compared to that challenging approach, you would start to hate making toys. I always look forward to what is yet to come from you!

I originally found your blog while searching google images for pictures of trees (I am an illustrator) and when I found your soft sculpture tree dolls, they weren’t exactly what I had in mind for my illustration reference, but i fell in LOVE. Amazing, (we’re not worthy!)
