Rose

July 25, 2006

My maternal grandmother, Rose B. Mensh, died early on Saturday morning. She was 90 and had a good life. She lived to see three great grandchildren. I knew grandma well – she and grandpa lived nearby when I was growing up. I will miss her. I flew down with Simon Sunday morning to go to the funeral on Monday and I just got back a few hours ago. I haven’t seen Roxy yet – she is still napping. I’m glad I was there to see my mom and her sisters. I think it is a testament to grandma that all nine of her grandchildren came in to say goodbye to her.

Before I left I finished the autumn tree girl

with a squirrel (at Charlie’s suggestion) in her hair.

Next is winter.

It was also nice to see my childhood home again. I haven’t been back in over three years. Among a few other treasures, I brought home these three birds. The oldest one belonged to my grandpa, Sidney (Rose’s husband). He collected owls. And the little brown owl is from a collection I had as a child of figurines you got for free with Red Rose tea. Did anyone else collect these?

Upon my arrival home was a swap package from in Germany. A lovely assortment of fabrics, some trim and buttons, a little pouch beautifully made and adorable, and a few other goodies. Such a good swap. Thank you, Isa.

And that’s all for now.

I’m so sorry about your grandmother. My heart goes out to your family. I love the tree girl, brilliant again! AND I collected the Red Rose Animals!!! I think I have a whole box in my parents attic. And the funny thing is, I saw a few in an antique shop a little while ago for like $8 a piece. Eight dollars!? Can you believe that?

I liked hearing about your grandmother – remembering is so essential to our souls and relationships, isn’t it? I also love the tree girl – I’m so excited about your idea! Do you think you’ll ever sell them?

I was sorry about your Grandma, I think it is so wonderful that she got to see her great grandchildren and they to see her – I sadly never really knew my grandparents.
On a brighter note – I love Autumn Girl she seems so serene and I can’t wait to see Winter.

Sounds like your grandma had a nice send off. We can only hope to be so lucky! I love your autumn tree girl! Stunning! Did you know that Red Rose still has the little figurines? I was so excited when I found mine- you’d have thought I was 4 years old again!

Sorry for the loss of your grandma, but glad to hear that you had a wonderful relationship. My partner of 13 years lost his grandmother just thismorning to cancer (it was a very fast decay) so it was comforting to come here and read that someone else is going through something similar.
Love your autumn tree girl – it’s beautiful. The squirrel is a great touch! And those birdies are so lovely.

I’m sorry to hear the news of your grandmother’s passing but how wonderful that you have special memories of her to treasure.
I also have to say I am in love with your tree dolls! They are incredibly cute, have great expressions and lovely details. You have to sell these, they’d be a guaranteed hit!

i am sorry to hear about your
    grandmother.
    and i have to say
    i gasped a little
    when i saw the little
    red rose owl…
    it took me right back
    to being a kid…
and sneaking them to play with
    and how they always
    felt heavy and cold…
    🙂

I’m sorry to hear about your Grandma. I miss my Grammy, too. I think about her when ever I water my flowers (her’s were amazing), bake something yummy, or do any other crafty/home-keeping activity. I like to imagine that if she were alive today and were my age, that we’d be BEST friends. We had so much in common. I KNOW she’d love your blog, too!
Thanks for sharing and letting me share.
    hugs,
    Melissa
