A Plush Lover’s Gift Guide: Soft Toys to Make and Buy for Kids Big and Small

November 26, 2014

I love stuffed animals. And I especially love handmade stuffed animals. As we head into the holiday shopping season, I’m excited for an excuse to buy some special plush for friends and family.

Here’s my hand-picked selection of softies that would make amazing gifts for kids and adults alike.

A plush lovers gift guideOwl Pillow by my mimi, Big Handmade Plush Whale by BigStuffed, Snowman Puppet by OnHandByHand, Pink Plush Bird by Stuffed Silly, Mr. Lion Heart by jipijipi, Sloth Pillow by PetitiPanda, Lucio the Space Crab by Cotton Monster, Moss Green Giant Frog by Andrea Vida, Burly Lumberjack Tattooed Man by Mimi Kirchner

If you’re buying a gift for a crafty friend who might appreciate a kit to sew their own plush, I’ve rounded up six of my favorites. These would also be perfect to get now if you’re planning to make some holiday gifts yourself (or if you have older children who’d like to make a gift).

Plush KitsLucky de Leeuw plush lion kit by DIY Fluffies, Penguin kit by Cynthia Treen Studio, Pocket Piggie pattern and kit by Gingermelon, Miss Juniper Kitty kit by Alicia Paulson of Posie Gets Cozy, Emma the Elephant kit by Wendi Gratz of Shiny Happy World, Cinnamon and Nutmeg bunny kit by Heidi Boyd

Books are my favorite gift to receive. I’m one of those geeky people who reads sewing books like they’re novels. Here’s my hand-picked selection of softie books I recommend.

Soft toy books

The Ultimate Sock Puppet Book by Tiger Kandel and Heather Schloss (I’m reading  this one now – review coming soon!), Make Your Own Soft Toys by Rob Merrett (read my review), Sew Fun by Deborah Fisher (read my review), Sew & Stitch Embroidery by Alyssa Thomas (read my review), Big Little Felt Universe by Jeanette Lim (read my review), Sew Cute to Cuddle by Mariska Vos-Bolman (read my review), Storybook Toys by Jill Hamor (read my review), Soft Animals A to Z by Carolyn Vosburg Hall (read my review), Anatomy of a Doll by Susanna Oroyan

I didn’t want to make a gift guide about any old thing. I wanted to really recommend things I know a lot about and that’s soft toys and gift hampers melbourne. I hope you’ll find something here that would be a perfect holiday gift for someone special (or for yourself!). Enjoy!

Thanks for recommending my book, Abby! I am especially honored to be included with Carolyn Vosburg Hall, one of my soft sculpture idols since I was young.

Of course, Deborah! Getting in touch with Carolyn Vosburg Hall is one of my long-term goals. I really want to talk with her about her career because she is one of my idols as well.

Oh wow! Bigstuffed’s plush whale is one of the best things ever! And its etsy ocean companions – thanks for pointing to this great whale, Abby. And to Sew Fun, which I’ve now purchased for my Christmas treat. Have a wonderful holiday season! Lisa B
