pattern development

May 16, 2011

DSC_0001
I'm working on a new pattern.  These are six head prototypes. Through making them I learned how to create a round monkey muzzle.  Today I made muslins of the body and the legs.  Pattern development is a long, messy process!

That is SUCH a good idea – make a muslin pattern instead of ruining lots of felt/fleece/etc. I’ve been comissioned to make a dinosaur, I think I will use this technique because I have no clue what I’m doing haha 🙂

SO messy and time consuming! I’m working on a badger right now, and I feel ya!
I love your work and I’m looking forward to your book!

I really hate the muslin process, but it really does make a difference. 🙂

I found your blog so helpful when trying to turn an image in my head into a superhero bear for a friends baby… Using tips from your tutorials, I made 6 heads, 3 bodies and two legs out of an old pillowcase before embarking on what became the finished piece:-) My worktable looked like I’d done some softie autopsies! He’s so cute, I found it hard to parcel him up in giftwrap; I definitely could not have made him without your fabulous blogs help. So thanks so much!

That looks so familiar – I use sheets for my early attempts – thay are so huge I don’t feel bad about all the “wasted fabric”
I am also mid-monkey (and have been for at least a year). You are sure to be done before me…

Using sheets is a great idea. It is freeing to not feel like you are wasting materials!

Wow! That is great to hear, Amy! I’m so glad you stuck with it through all those trials and came out with something that worked! Yay!

With all of your pattern innovations, you’ve opened a door to a new world for me as far as toy making is concerned. I used to think that it was really just all about following other people’s patterns. Through your posts (and eventually your next book) you’re showing the world that making original designs is something that is available to everyone.

Wow, Audra! That is so nice to hear! That is my intent exactly. I really hope you enjoy creating your own toy patterns!
