New Pattern: Scarf Buddies + Bonus Mittens to Match

January 14, 2019

Fleece scarf sewing pattern for kids

I’m so excited today to be launching my brand new pattern. Meet the Scarf Buddies! Four snuggly animal scarves to make for kids (or grandkids).

For years I’ve made my daughter’s fleece animal hats each winter and I’ve always thought it would be so fun to also make cute scarves, too. It gets really cold and windy here in Boston during the (long!) winter months and a scarf is a must-have. So, after such a long time of thinking about it, I finally sat down and designed these Scarf Buddies critter scarves. I hope you and your kids like them as much as we do!

Cat Scarf

Owl Scarf

The designs include a kitty cat, a giraffe, a fish, and an owl and I intended them to appeal to both boys and girls, depending on the fabrics you choose. They’re sewn from fleece which is super warm and also inexpensive and easy to find at the craft store (I usually buy fleece at either JOANN or Fabric.com). Fleece is machine washable (on the delicate cycle for these scarves because they do have safety eyes and some felt accents) which makes it practical, too.

Fish Scarf

Giraffe Scarf

I wanted to be sure to include a pattern for mittens along with the scarves because I think a scarf and mitten set makes a really nice gift. The mitten pattern is a free bonus and it comes in two sizes: toddler (ages 0-2) and child (ages 3-6). This pattern can definitely grow with your kids.

The sewing skills required to make the Scarf Buddies are not advanced which means if you wanted to actually make the Scarf Buddies with your child as an afternoon or weekend project that would be totally doable. Let them choose the animal and the fabric and get some practice with their cutting and sewing skills while you guide them along. The finished project is something they can proudly wear to school and show their friends.

(I’ve been working on this pattern for a few months now and I want to give a shoutout to Page+Pixel for the beautiful photos they took of my finished samples, and to my graphic designer, Lindsie Bergevin, for the fantastic page layout. I’m so grateful for this little team that makes my work shine!)

I’m running a special launch sale on the Scarf Buddies pattern for a limited time! Now through Friday, January 18 the pattern is 25% off. You’ll get all four designs, plus both mitten sizes, for a great price. Grab it now and sew it when you’re ready!

    Hi

I just bought this pattern. I was wondering where you got the fleece? What is the fish scale one called and the cat?

    Thanks
    Jannett

    Hi Abby,

I love your scarf buddies pattern, especially the giraffe is absolutely adorable!

I’m a sewing newbie documenting my journey and just started a couple of months ago. You mentioned that no advanced skills are needed which is great but I feel like I’m not ready yet to take up this challenge. However, the pattern is on my future-sewing-project-list and I know that the day will come for me to tackle this challenge and until then, it will be a great motivation to keep me going.

Can’t wait to read more from you soon.

    All the best,
    Yvonne

    Hi Abby,
I just purchased the Scarf Buddies pattern. My question is- what is the extended version pattern piece and how is it used? Is it for a shorter scarf ? I am planning to make it for my almost 3 granddaughter and am thinking a shorter scarf may be good.
Thanks. Love your patterns and I have made many of your fun softies!!

Hi Margaret, Some of the designs require the extended piece and others don’t. It’s not an option for making a shorter scarf (although you could do that if you wanted to by just shortening the overall length of the main piece). These scarves are already sized for small bodies. When you are sewing your particular design you’ll see that piece called for if it’s needed.
