A friend of mine is due to have her first baby next month. There’s something so special about sewing for a baby. In fact, I think a lot of people discover sewing or rediscover it because they want to make something special for a baby. These life cycle events seem to compel us to want to give a gift from the heart, and that means handmade.
I decided to make a bear and matching mini blankie using my Baby Bear and Blankie pattern. I headed to JOANN and found this ultra-luxe fleece which is super soft and just a bit thicker than their standard blizzard fleece. It’s a mottled warm brown color. I paired it with white flannel that has ditzy polka dots in pink and green (my friend is having a girl) plus pink and green ribbons for the blankie loops and the bear’s bow.
I like this project for babies because the bear’s features are embroidered so there’s no worry about plastic safety eyes or bits of felt that could be pulled out over time. Also, it’s machine washable which I know from experience is super important.
This gift has already been received. I’m excited for my friend to welcome her new little one!

I often like to give certificates to a children’s store, because even if you can know a person well, you can miscalculate with a gift, is not it?
