New Pattern: Humpty Dumpty

January 22, 2014

Humpty Dumpty Cover

I have a new pattern out today. He's a classic nursery rhyme character come to life in a fun-to-sew doll. Meet my friend, Humpty Dumpty!

I planted the seed for this pattern six years ago when I made a small, jointed Humpty Dumpty doll out of quilting cotton for a show at our local library. Although I made four dozen other toys for that show, Humpty was the star. I set him up on bricks in the display case at the entrance to the children's room and it was so great standing there watching the kids notice him as they walked in.

Abby and Humpty Dumpty

Me in 2007 at the Wellesley Public Library. See Humpty there on the right?

In 2010 a movie producer in California bought a Humpty Dumpty from me to use as a prop in a Hollywood film.

And then, when Craftsy.com got off the ground a few years ago, I created a workshop based on that original Humpty Dumpty pattern for them. Craftsy phased out their workshops last year (they still have lots of great online classes, though) and Humpty has been on my mind since then.

Today I'm excited to release a brand new version of Humpty Dumpty. This one is much bigger and is sewn from fleece. He's huggable, machine washable, and designed to really be played with. Knock him down, why don't you? He won't crack, I promise.

Humpty with Child

While I was researching historical Humpty Dumpties I came across several paper doll versions and thought it might be fun to create my own. When you purchase this pattern you get a free printable paper doll to color and assemble.

My 7-year-old colored this guy. If you make Humpty as a gift you can print out a copy of the paper doll, too, as a little extra, maybe for a big brother or big sister to make.

I was just wondering do you make them and see them or is it just the pattern you sell?

I am helping plan a baby shower and the theme is nursery rhymes. This little bit of cuteness would be perfect for or gathering but I don’t have a sewing machine and know very little about sewing. I is there anyone you know who might be able to make one for me.

    Thanks for your help,

    DeAngelia Johnson

Hi DeAngelia, I’m sorry, but I don’t know of anyone. Maybe you could find a local seamstress?

    Abby,
I am just starting to sew again for the first time in over twenty-five years; I made dolls sewn by hand- not machine. I didn’t have the finesse with the machine and more importantly liked the more personal feel and quality of the handmade dolls. I would love to make Humpty Dumpty for my grandson’s second birthday. Can yours be sewn by hand? I love your Humpty’s friendly, impish face and the simplicity of the overall lines as well as the plush egg. Thank you.

Hi Jan, Yes, you could sew this Humpty Dumpty by hand, but I would suggest using a cotton fabric instead of fleece because I find fleece to be rather hard to sew by hand.

Thank you, Abby, I appreciate your suggestion about using cotton. I look forward to making Humpty Dumpty!
