Bee Mine Sew-Along: Making Heart-Shaped Wings for Your Love Bug

January 21, 2014

Welcome to Week #2 of the Bee Mine Sew-Along!

We've got a great crowd of sewists signed up and it's time to jump in and begin sewing! If you're new to the sew-along, we're working with the Benji the Bumblebee pattern this month to make adorable love bugs for Valentine's Day.

The pattern is 50% off all month long (that's just $4.50). Grab a copy to get started!

Heart-Shaped Wings

You can make bumblebee-style wings for your love bug with the templates included in the pattern, or if you'd like, you can swap those out and make cute heart-shaped wings. Here's how.

Heart shaped wings 1

1. Trace two of the larger wing shape provided and overlap them a bit toward the bottom. This will give you a rough heart shape.

2. Trace it on a piece of paper (or freezer paper) and then refine it a bit. Cut off the bottom tip of the heart. And that's it! You've got a pretty heart-shaped wing template.

3. Cut four heart-shaped wings from your wing fabric. Pair them up right sides together and then stitch around each wing. Clip the curves, especially between the nodes of the heart, and turn the wings right sides out. Sew them to your love bug according to the pattern instructions!

Not sure what fabrics to choose?

How about one of these pretty Valentine's fleece prints! These are from Fabric.com which has a great selection of fleece, but I know you can find them at Wal-Mart and Joann's, too, this time of year.

To make one love bug you'll need 3 different colors of fleece, 1/2 yard cuts of each, and you'll be left with plenty for another project, too.

Sew Along with Us!

Sew a love bug using the Benji the Bumblebee pattern, then post a photo on my Facebook page (or email it to me: abbyglassenberg at comcast.net) by February 13.

Never Been Stitched

On Valentine's Day one lucky participant will win Never Been Stitched, a brand new book from Lark Crafts that includes 45 no-sew and low-sew projects. I think you're going to love it!

Bee Mine Button

Here's a nifty button to use in a blog post, and the hashtag for Instagram and Twitter is #beeminesewalong. I have to sew three love bugs for these three characters.

Sisters

I'm working on the second one this week. Join the fun!
