Matryoshka Dolls

June 6, 2005

After my series of craft disasters, I’m back in the swing of things. On Friday I picked a new project that I got pretty excited about – making sets of Matryoshka dolls. You know, those Russian nesting dolls, but made from fabric. I put my new embroidery stitches from my embroidery book to work and I’m pretty pleased with how their little faces came out. I especially like the mamma’s fluffy hair – reminds me of Roxy in the morning!

It is eerily quite right now at my house because Roxy is napping on a new schedule so she is asleep now (a time when she is usually awake and goofing around in her high chair eating lunch). I’m am working on getting her down to one long afternoon nap a day instead of the two nap schedule we’ve been on for the last seven months. We had the whole morning out this morning for the first time since she was an infant. I’m never out between 9:00-10:00 am – it was really crazy.

Anyway, I was cheered up on Friday and inspired to get started on something new partially because I received this neato package from Amanda as part of my little trim swap. There were actually two little bundles (one for Roxy and one for me) all sewn up so nicely. The blue wool felt which makes the mamma matryoshka’s babushka (it rhymes!) was part of the package, as was this:

and some other beads (and yummy chocolates which have already been consumed). Thank you, Amanda! There are two other trim packages left if anyone else would like to swap for some crafty supplies.

Way to go, quite an impressive recovery from a crafting pickle! I love the little nesting dolls, this is a great idea of a way to do them. I’m glad you liked the package; the blue felt looks great on the mama.

Wow!! I have never seen fabric nesting dolls! What a great idea! I used to collect the wooden ones when I was a kid, but the collection was lost somewhere along the way…these fabric ones are so sweet! I’d love to make a little set of nesting kitties!

those are really cool. Matt got me nesting dolls that turn from a clown into a devil, quite spooky. Good job with the faces too, i like how the mouths are kind of shaped like hearts. Also, i forgot to say that i think the bear with the light green dress and flowers is so visually appealing! Great use of color.
