How to Ladder Stitch: Joining Softie Parts with Invisible Stitches

October 1, 2013

Ladder stitch is a revolutionary technique when it comes to sewing softies. Once you learn how it works, you never look back.

Whenever you want to add ears or a nose or a tail to your softie, ladder stitch them on and the stitches will be totally invisible. Need to close up a stuffing opening? Ladder stitch it closed and no matter what color thread you chose, you'll never see the stitches. It's very simple to do and it gives your toys a more professional finish.

In this short video I show you how to ladder stitch. If you've haven't used ladder stitch before, I hope you'll give it a try on your next softie project!

I used ladder stitch to sew the cute little nose on Candace the Candy Corn, my new Halloween softie pattern.  Happy sewing!

That’s really cool. It is so easy to understand when you see the stitching in action on the video.

I had no idea what this stitch was called but managed to figure it out years ago when sewing for my children. Thank you so much for sharing a video about ladder stitch. It is the most useful stitch and so many new sewers get frustrated making large whipstitches that show and then become disappointed. This is wonderful.

I realize this is an old post so I’m not sure if you’ll see this message but I had to write to tell you how much I liked this tutorial. It’s not the first time I’ve heard about this stitch and read “how to” instructions but never saw a video detailing exacting how to sew one.. It will be perfect to use for my projects. Thank you so much!!
