Hot Air Balloon

March 7, 2007

One of my oldest friends, Julie, emailed me a few months ago saying that she’d like to commission a toy for her daughter, Carly’s, room.  When they moved into their house in Colorado there was a pre-existing hook in the ceiling of Carly’s room and Julie couldn’t find anything she was happy with to hang there.  Carly is really in to balloons so I thought a hot air balloon would work well.

Carly’s room has some pink, some yellow and some blue so I tried to pick coordinating fabrics.  It was kind of fun working with such bright colors.

Julie and I became friends in fifth grade when I was in Mrs. Schmidt’s class (Mrs. Schmidt hated me and sent me to the principal’s office for passing notes) and she was in Mrs. Neilson’s class at Wayside Elementary School.  That means we’ve been friends for 21 years.  This was a fun project for me.

Abby–I love love love it! And I know Carly is going to also. Thank you so much, just looking at it feels fun. The little basket is so adorable, what a great idea. We can’t wait til we hang it on the ceiling! 21 years is a looong time. I’m so glad we’re still in touch.
    love, Julie

I had my own Mrs. Schmidt. Her name was Mrs. Dominguez … 3rd grade … it was a horrific year.

What a sweet gift, and a sweet friendship story, too. I wonder where Mrs. Schmidt is now (and I’m hoping that I’m not “Mrs. Schmidt” for any of my students)!
