Each month Mollie Johanson organizes her blog, Wild Olive, around a particular animal. All of her projects, patterns, and printables for the month incorporate that animal motif. I think this is a really brilliant way to blog. A month-long visual theme can help you to brainstorm new ideas (what if I put it on a pillow? or create a cross stitch design? or a greeting card?) and it helps to tie everything together for readers who could make several of that month’s projects for a coordinated set. I love that.
Flying squirrel illustration by Mollie Johanson.
This month on Wild Olive the theme is flying squirrels. Mollie has created a flying squirrel desktop wallpaper and a flying squirrel embroidery pattern, and she asked me if I would design a flying squirrel softie pattern to go along with them. Of course!
Hop on over to Wild Olive where you can download the free templates and get step-by-step instructions to make your own huggable flying squirrel. I hope you like him!
That is adorable. I will make one for my godson!
I’m so glad to hear it, Vicky!
I finished my squirrel last week and gave it to little L yesterday and he loved it. Thank you so much for the cute pattern Abby!

Thank you so much, Anne! I really appreciate it.
This is simply adorable! I don’t really have anyone I can sew it for… thinking of making it for myself! 🙂
I am so tickled by the way you’ve posed this little squirrel!
This is so sweet – I think I’d like one of these too!
Great pattern and photos, I love that second one from the bottom – he looks like he’s dancing in the air!
Ha! He does! Thank you 🙂
He is really cute – I want one for my own self ! The photos you have taken are so lovely too.
That is absolutely adorable! It makes me want to give sewing another try!!
Adorable. Looks great for BB. I might add a sheet of plastic bag in the body so it will crinkle when it moves.
I love your work. I kind of think your are one of the smartest blog writer in the “sewing network”. Love to read your newsletter. Always teaching me something new.
That’s so nice of to say, Corinne! Thank you. And I think adding some crinkle to the body is a terrific idea.
That’s so cuuuute! I’m totally going to make some of these! 🙂
Thanks for this 🙂 A fun distraction for the afternoon! The pattern was easy to follow and I made one with cuddle fleece today and posted on blog.
He’s so cute, Kris! Thank you for sharing!
That is just the most adorable thing! Thank so much for sharing!

i would be nice if you could put the template on their as well
Hi Leslie,
The templates are available right on Mollie’s site on Wild Olive. Thanks!
A few weeks ago, 2 friends and I held a little craft party and put together 3 of these. They are adorable, and best of all, they really do fly. Hold by the tail and give them a good fling, like a frisbee. My cat loves to chase after it!!!
That’s awesome, Amy, and I had no idea they actually flew. I’ll have to try flinging mine!
bonjour,
superbe site que je viens de découvrir.
serait-il possible d’avoir le patron de votre écureuil

Aww, this little guy is so cute! I’m going to add magnets inside of his paws and stick him to my file cabinet at work!
How do I get this pattern? It’s so adorable!
I love thhis squirrel. If it were not 2:05 AM I would sew one up right now but I guess I should wait for morning light at least! Can’t wait!
I hope you have fun with it!
Made one of this guy after finding the pattern on Wild Olive – fun and easy to put together. And apparently the recipient wants the squirrel in bed every night. 😀
