Yesterday the kids were home from school because our school system had a professional day. We made salt dough in the afternoon. We do this every year and it is always fun, inexpensive and really easy.
To make the dough, mix:
1 cup salt + 1 cup warm water. Swirl around to dissolve some of the salt. Add 2 cups flour. Knead for a few minutes.
You can add food coloring directly tp the dough or paint or color it after it is baked and hardened.
We spent nearly an hour rolling the dough out, cutting it with cookie cutters and poking designs in it with toothpicks. It's great for making beads, ornaments (of course), gift tags, buttons, pins, magnets…you name it. Cut a bunch of related shapes and make a garland or a mobile. Or napkin rings. Fun!
Bake at 250 degrees for two hours, flip them over and bake two more hours. After they cool, paint or color with sharpies. If you want to keep them for more than a season, seal with Mod Podge. While the Mod Podge is wet, you can add glitter, too.
