Our little friend, Darla, is turning six today. I made her a sewing kit for her birthday.
I bought this hinged wooden box at Michael's. It has a magnetic closure. I cut some pink polka dotted paper and used Mod Podge to glue a square of it on top and a smaller square on the inside of the top. Then I made a pin cushion and a needle book.
She loves fairies so I used a some fairy fabric for these. I pulled out my buttons and selected a small collection of colorful, pretty buttons and then I slipped in a few small spools of thread and a pair of sewing scissors.
I thought it would be fun for her to have some scraps of fabric to play with (my scrap basket is one of my kid's favorite toys). I found this little linen draw-string bag and made a pink linen patch for and stamped it with the word "scraps."
And I also wanted to give her a real project to try. I had a leftover felt pencil case from the Daisy Scouts project so I included that along with the button, pencils, and felt flowers and glue stick (the flowers are for embelishing the case after it is sewn). Darla is a pretty awesome six-year-old. I hope that she enjoys doing some sewing!
The pincushion and needle book w scissors are so sweet. Good idea about the magnetic closure box. Scraps hooray and a project. A gift you can’t buy and better! The pins on the pincushion make one think of fairy dust…all the more magical! Go Darla go!

This is a nice idea, even for my grown up friends! Many of these friends are always asking me to “teach them to sew.” Nothing better than giving someone the tools and a small project.
