Every boy doll needs a dapper bow tie. In just a few minutes you can turn a few leftover scraps of fleece into an awesome softie accessory (or hairclip…or brooch).
Ready? Let’s go!
Gather some supplies:
- all-purpose thread
- a few pins
- a pinback or hairclip (if you’re so inclined)
- one piece of fleece that’s a 3 1/4″ x 2 1/2″ rectangle
- two pieces of fleece that are 4 1/2″ x 3″ rectangles with the corners rounded
Pin the two larger rectangles together. Fold the smaller rectangle the long way and pin.
Sew all the way around the large rectangles. Cut a small slit in the center of one of the larger rectangles for turning.
Sew along one short edge and one long edge of the smaller rectangle, leaving the other short edge open.
Turn both right side out.
Stitch the hole in the larger rectangle closed. No need to be neat! These stitches will be covered up later.
Pinch the larger rectangle in the middle to form a bow shape.
Wrap the smaller rectangle around.
Overlap the sewn end of the smaller rectangle over the unsewn end. Pin in place. Stitch along the short edge of the sewn rectangle to hold everything in place. This is the back of your bow tie.
Emma likes to wear this one in her hair. Liam chose an orange one to compliment his outfit.
Make some dolls to go with your bow ties! You’ll find the patterns for Emma and Liam in my shop.

I made a bunch of these in high school for hair bows. (It was the ’90s and big silly bows were in)

That’s how I got started sewing! I bought a machine when I was 13 and had a nice business selling handmade bows and scrunchies in middle school!

That’s awesome!

OOooohoohoo HOW CUTE CUTE CUTE! I’m so in love with Lliam and his bow tie!! I absolutely adore your dolls. The hair line is perfect and I love the bendy arms and legs. Do you think you might offer the boy and girl pattern as a pair rather than buying both separate?
Thanks for all your great posts, Abby! I can’t tell you how helpful your small business posts have been to me and I love getting inspiration from your softies (I’m a crocheter myself but love to dabble in all sorts of crafts). Keep up the great work!

Cute! And thank you for the tip of cutting a hole in the back for turning – would never have crossed my mind yet it is totally logical.

Hi Steph,
Thank you so much! I’m glad you like the dolls and I’m also glad that the small business posts are helpful to you. I think I’m going to keep the dolls patterns separate right now, but that’s a great idea for some future point to couple them together, or even create an ebook with them plus some additional patterns and tutorials. Thanks!
Abby

I had some leftover fleece and couldn’t find a tutorial for a cute bow until I came across your site. I made one and it came out adorable! I am attaching alligator clips and donating them to an inner city pregnancy counseling place. Thank you!!
