A few simple embroidery stitches can really add a lot of beauty and detail to your sewing project. For softie making I often use embroidery to create facial features: eyes, noses, mouths, eyebrows and lashes.
Chain stitch is a nice outline stitch. It's a bit thicker than back stitch which allows it to stand out against a busy background or plush pile. And it's easy to control so it's perfect for outlining curvy shapes.
I use chainstitch to make the cute eyes on Stella the Owl. The baby owlet's eyes are a few satin stitches.

What really strikes me are the pretty prints and how they are combined in each one. Polka dots, paisleys, and florals together!
This owl is one of mine. I think the low-volume red print is perfect for the owl's body, and paired with a pop of color and pattern on the wings and feet this owl came out really nicely.
This is a quick-sew pattern you can make in just about an hour, and it's not hard to make with kids.
