Goldfish Hat from Fleece Hat Friends by Mary Rasch

September 12, 2016

Fleece Hat Friends Goldfish Hat

My middle son Simon, loves to wear hats. All summer he wore a Spiderman baseball cap. When he gets dressed up he wears a fedora. And in the winter he likes to have a fleece animal hat to wear.

Most of the winter animal hats in stores are for little kids and after lots of searching without any luck we ordered Fleece Hat Friends by Mary Rasch last year so that we could make one. (See my review of this book.)

Last year, when he was in 4th grade, he chose a chicken.

He wore that hat every single day of the winter (and we have long winters here in Boston). Everywhere we went people remarked on her hat and he proudly pointed to me saying, “My mom made it.” This hat was like a hug from me that he could take wherever he went.

Last week as we geared up for back-to-school he pulled the book off my shelf again and spent a good deal of time considering which animal he wanted, finally settling on the goldfish.

The main modifications we made were to add some fish lips and to sew the fins and tail in yellow rather than orange. These hats are really easy to sew and they’re super warm (ear flaps are a necessity when it’s 4 degrees and you walk to school).

Now that Simon is in his last year of elementary school I imagine the days are numbered when he’ll want to wear an animal hat her mom made. For now he’s totally thrilled with the idea so I’m savoring this moment.

Cool mornings will be here before you know it. Grab a copy of Fleece Hat Friends, choose from one of the 25 animal designs, and make a hat for someone you love .

Stella must be a fun kid. She has a lot of confidence, and can think for herself. The fish hat will make everyone around her smile. And, if they don’t, then she will know they have no sense of humor.

I love this!! Your daughter is adorable and I am so glad she still loves the cute hats. I have a son and every year, he’d pick out a cute animal hat. You are so right that the hats are only made for the little ones and so we stopped last year. He’s 9 now and I think that this would be something he’d love. I have a kiddo that is cool enough to rock one of these hats at 9! 🙂 I ordered the book immediately and I can’t wait to get started when it gets here! I’d love to hear more of your advice as to how you make the lips and such. Great timing and very cool post…just love how amazing your daughter is!!

I ordered the book right away & showed it to my 4 y/o granddaughter Emi. As she flipped through the pages she asked if I could make that one for her & this one for her. And then it was ALL of them , & of course one of each for her brother! Sure Honey, Grandma can do that!!
