Free Teddy Bear Sewing Pattern: Pete the Bear

May 6, 2013

Pete The Bear Pattern Cover

I made this bear today and I thought you might like to make him, too. Meet Pete the Bear! He’s my favorite kind of softie to make: easy and quick to sew and you can make him from scrap materials.

DSC_0068Ready to get started? Get the free pattern download! Here’s the Pete the Bear Pattern. Enjoy!

EDITED JULY 14, 2014: See more fun examples of Pete the Bear sewn from quilting cottons right here.

Love,

Abby

P.S. Why didn’t the teddy bear eat his lunch? Because he was stuffed!

Leave me bear joke, okay? I’ll give you a bear hug 🙂

A free pattern for Pete the Bear.

Thank you soooooo much Abby. I sew for the children’s hospital here in Spokane and this is perfect! The kids will love it especially when they are tired and scared and just plain don’t feel good. Will be making bunches for them and will put a photo on my blog when finished. Come visit!

Aww, he is sooo cute! Makes me wish I had a baby to sew him up for. 🙂
Sorry don’t know any bear jokes, but yours was funny! Maybe I could bear some more…

He’s adorable! Thanks for the pattern. If I make him, I might have to keep him, though. He’s so cute I don’t know if I could bear to part with him… 😉

    It looks so lovely!!!
A man in a movie theater notices what looks like a bear sitting next to him.
“Are you a bear?” asked the man, surprised.
    “Yes.”
“What are you doing at the movies?”
The bear replied, “Well, I liked the book.”
    :o))

    Hi Abby,
Thank you so much for the pattern. I have a cardigan of my nieces that has some pretty embroidery on but no longer fits so I am going to make a bear for her using your pattern. If it works out well I can see many more well loved clothes turning into teds.
    Carla.

What a wonderful idea! How about a “goodnight” bear out of some well loved pj’s? Or if you have an embroidery machine, a child’s name on the belly? Oh, so many ideas and so many children to love them!

Sewwwwww cute! Just need to clarify your request that the pattern is “for personal use only.” Clearly, the pattern could not be sold, but does it also mean that objects made from the pattern could also not be sold?
Love your blog & your designs!

Thank you for asking. Although I do allow you to sell handmade items made from any of my paid patterns, I don't allow it from my free patterns. Thank you!

Can’t wait to try to make this. Wondering if maybe kids could make it in my Sewing School camp? Thinking this will be just right for some of the older kids. Thanks!

    Hi Amie,
Yes, it is fine to use this pattern for a camp. I think kids would really love it. Enjoy!

Hi thanks for the pattern! Would you recommend a 100% wool felt for this project or any other felt?

  18. Abby Glassenberg says

    November 22, 2013 at 10:41 am

You can use any sort of felt or soft fabric for Pete the Bear. I used a piece of wool here. You can use a felted wool sweater, fleece, flannel, wool-felt, or whatever you might have on hand.

OMG What a cutie-patootie! I’ve downloaded this pattern so my stuffie-crazy girls (8 in ringette camp and 5 in swim camp) can work on this after summer camps have ended next month. Perhaps make a few for their friends for the dreaded back-to-school.

Here’s a bear joke that’s been circulating around our house:
Q: What do you call a bear with no teeth?
    A: A gummy bear!!!

Something happened to my post so it told me to repost? I Can’t bear it! I suggested a bear out of some loved pj’s and embroidery a child’s name on the bear’s belly. When I try these I will post a pix. I will see my granddaughter this week and try to get some out grown pj’s!

I have a stack of my husband’s dress coats he had to wear at work to give to GoodWill but there is one wool one I tnink I will reclaim to make bears! The weave is very attractive and I have always loved it. There is enough fabric there for several bears. Think I will make one for each grandchild.

Thank you so much for the pattern. I’m 75 years old and live in a senior home. We make small projects in order to sell them and make some funds for some activities that some people who don’t have the money want to participate. I hope that I can use your project with your permission.
    Thank you again
