flying crow

December 12, 2008

DSC_0021

Today I finished a third crow, this one flying with wings down.

DSC_0016

They are suspended right now from thumbtacks pushed into the drop ceiling in the studio (read our bedroom) so it is a bit hard to photograph them in good light.  Here they are together. The standing one is on the ironing board.

It struck me when I saw this how great it would be if there were 16 crows (a covey?).  If only I had the time and the patience, and maybe a helper, I could make a crazy set up of crows alighting and flying in formation and pecking at grass.  How cool would that be.

I love your crows and think a big instillation of them would be amazing. However, I believe that a group of crows is called a murder. You can have a covey of grouse though.
Numbers of crows are significant in an old rhyme (I think it’s Irish, but I might be making that part up):
One for sorrow, two for joy,
Three for a girl, four for a boy,
Five for silver, six for gold,
Seven for a secret never to be told,
Eight for a wish, nine for a kiss,
Ten for a time of joyous bliss.

A group of crows is called a murder. Sadly, not as cute as a covey.

I think they’re beautiful! Imagine walking into a gallery and have them all suspended around you. You’d get a Hitchcock’s The Birds thing going on.
I love them btw. I love how you make birds. The feathers layering effect looks incredible, and unique!

A whole murder of crows would be wonderful! I really love your birds, they texture of the “feathers” is beautiful.
And the “one for sorrow” rhyme is usually used for magpies, but it can be used for counting crows and others of the corvidae family too.

Frankly, I wish “murder” meant group for more things. “A murder of bunnies” just sounds really violent, though.

i love these crows. a huge installation would be amazing. i’m thinking hitchcock’s “the birds” here, where people would have to carefully step through a whole room full of crows to get from one side to the other. i’m getting chills just thinking about it!
