I finished this soft elephant last night. She is made from a scarf I found at the Salvation Army in New London around Thanksgiving.
Actually, there will be two of them because I accidentally sewed two right pieces and no left pieces so I had to cut out two left pieces and thus, two identical elephants resulted. Oh well. We had to go out and buy more polyfil yesterday (three more bags at $3.99 a pop!). I feel like I’m always running out of polyfil. I have been considering trying some wool stuffing ever since I visited Mimi and she told me how lovely it is to work with. They don’t sell it at Joann’s, of course. It seems like wool stuffing, or wool batting like she uses, is an Amish business. The company Mimi orders hers from doesn’t have a web presence, but I should really give them a call. My only concern is whether a softie stuffed with wool will be as good for babies as one stuffed with polyfil. It seems like people are concerned about wool allergies now and will the finished creature be machine washable?
I also finished two ATC’s today which I promised to someone a while ago. They are paper collages – not a medium I’m as comfortable with, but a fun exercise. I post pictures once they have arrived at their final destination.
Nap time was so unproductive today. I took a nap and talked on the phone and ate some soup and now I hear a little voice coming from the crib talking about a fire truck. Maybe I can get something done this evening.

I love the little ribbon on the elephant’s ear! I’m sure there are other places that sell wool stuffing (you can search for roving for those who would spin into yarn), but I know that Magic Cabin (http://www.magiccabin.com) has some, search for “wool stuffing”. I’ve bought some to make a doll, but haven’t gotten to that project yet. It’s supposed to be nice in the way it responds to being hugged by a child, warming from their body heat, and therefore feeling more “alive”. But I’m sure it wouldn’t be washable, as then it would just felt.
The elephant is cute cute. On the topic of stuffing, have you ever tried to use beans or rice (not cooked – that would make a mess)? I bet a bean bag in one of your sweet little patterns would be fun.
