After finishing the blue bird I decided to go back and revisit one of my old patterns. I made this dog pattern a long while ago (maybe last spring?) and he was a cutie, but I was always frustrated with his legs because they kept splaying out no matter what I did. I would make the under gusset smaller and smaller, but to no avail. Since then, though, I’ve learned a bit about how to put darts in an under gusset that totally solve this problem (all of my birds are made this way).
So here is the new version.
I sewed pipe cleaners in his ears so they are posable. Pipe cleaners are a great solution because they are soft, but are still wire. I ended up adding a lot of spots because Simon basically didn’t nap yesterday afternoon and I can hand sew in his room while he plays.
This morning Charlie took Roxanne to Whole Food to buy everything for the Seder on Monday (we’re hosting again so I’ll be cooking quite a bit in the next three days – good thing I enjoy that sort of thing) and I took Simon to the flea market at the Needham Congregational Church. For $3.60 total we found a lovely linen cloth napkin, an owl bank (so great!) and a recipe box (perfect for me because my old one that I bought at Wal-Mart in Greenwood, Mississippi is broken).
If you are allergic to animal fur but still want a lovable companion around the house, you should check out these large hypoallergenic dogs that you may consider.
On the Seder menu:
-homemade salmon gefilte fish
-homemade horseradish (this is Charlie’s job)
-homemade haroset
-matzoh ball soup (I use the mix – it’s seriously tasty)
-sweet and sour brisket (my mom’s recipe)
-broccoli rabe with garlic
-carrot and apple tsimmes (a new-to-me recipe from Charlie’s colleague)
-and homemade sponge cake (from the Joy of Cooking) with berries and ice cream for dessert
Whew! I better get started.

what a cute little pooch!
is your mom’s brisket recipe a super-secret family thing, or is there a chance of it being shared?
the dog is precious!
happy cooking.
Lovely little dog!
And the menu sounds delicious!
i LOVE this littl puppy!
Sweet puppy, Abby!! So cute!
Amazing what a little dart will do, huh? I’m still learning for sure.
I love little poseable puppy! Especially his one-foot-out-and-back pose, is he studying ballet?
Oh that doggy is so adorable! Great design. Fabulous idea using the pipe cleaners for the posable ears.
That Seder menu looks quite appealing.
Heee! The dog is gorgeous! I love when you learn things along the way and can then use them to rescue past projects that you’ve struggled with. 🙂
good luck with the cooking- we went to the kosher bakery tonight. I totally avoided tomorrow because it will be nuts! So they opened from 8 till midnight tonight and we hit it up!
That puppy – I love his spots.
Mmm, matzo ball soup My grandma makes hers from scratch, right down to the chicken stock, and it’s amaaaazing.
Her tip for matzoh balls, which I’ve found works just as well with a mix as from scrtach, is to use setlzer water in place of however much water the recipe call for. It makes them fluffier.
when I was a kid my mom had the exact same recipe box. (probably still does)
can I come to your house for dinner? yum.
I love that little doggy, i’ve also always liked that one that was similar but fatter, with a plaid fabric. officially outing myself as a longtime lurker here. thanks for sharing 🙂
