Making Christmas Stockings

October 14, 2011

Felt Applique Christmas Stockings
Yes, I am going from sewing for Sukkot to sewing for Christmas. That's how it rolls around here.

I am making samples for a class I am hoping to teach in November on felt applique Christmas stockings.  I have never celebrated Christmas and although I've certainly seen many stockings I really had no idea what the dimensions should be. This was interesting to figure out. I'm going to make a few more with different motifs.

LOL. I have only celebrated Christmas (and secularly, if that’s not another LOL), but I don’t think there’s any set dimension or even proportion. Make them any way you like! (But I might round the heel a little more.)

I got some stockings as a gift from Lands End a few years ago. I’m making stockings, too, so I just copied around my Lands End stockings for the general shape. They’re just supposed to be big socks, right? 🙂

I made two more stockings this weekend with different designs and I’m having quite a bit of fun with them, but I’m worrying that they are a bit small? 15 inches in length. I’m seeing some on Etsy that are 19 inches. Perhaps bigger is indeed better?
