I was looking for a fun summer patchwork project and decided to make my free Casey the Crab pattern up with some quilting cottons (the original sample is in fleece). I grew up in Maryland going to the Eastern Shore with my family every summer. We would always get Maryland crabs one night, usually at Ed’s in Dewey Beach, and it was an absolute highlight of summer for me.
For years I drank my morning coffee from a mug I bought on the boardwalk that said, “Don’t bother me. I’m crabby.” So perfect (especially because my name rhymes with crabby, not that anybody every calls me that in the morning…).
Want to make a patchwork crab of your own? Grab my free pattern and give it a go.

Love the crab! I live in Delaware and know Ed’s in Dewey Beach very well. So sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Ed’s is no more. It burned down this week and the owner has decided he won’t rebuild. So sad.
Abby says
I know! I saw that just as I was writing this post. So sad!

I’m a french mother of one, and I can’t write very well in american or english, but I want to thank you for sharing this pattern! I live with my little family on an indian ocean island, called “Mayotte”, and this crab will be a perfect softie for my little one who is 6 month old!
Abby says
That’s wonderful!

I love this crab but when I get the free pattern, it comes as a solid crab instead of the patchwork crab. Are the pieces just sewn together to fit the body parts of the pattern?
Abby says
Yep, just made a big piece of patchwork, then cut the pattern pieces from that.
