building my custom plush portfolio

February 7, 2012

Two more finished custom pieces to show today. Heidi Rettig left a comment on a post I wrote a few weeks ago asking if I would make a plush version of her company logo. Heidi has an arts consulting company. I took a look at her logo and I thought it seemed like a cool project that would help me to show some range. She sent me this image of her logo:

Unknown
And I created a plush version:

Super fun.

I am also continually working on creating custom plush from children's drawings building up to being able to offer this in my shop this spring. We went up to the attic on Saturday to bring down boxes of artwork that the older girls made in preschool and it's like a goldmine. I found a drawing of a rattlesnake Roxanne made when she was four-years-old and obsessed with the Gadsden flag.

Rattlesnake plush
The furry tail with yarn sticking out was all Charlie's idea. I had fun drawing with stitches to recreate the circles she drew on the snake's body.

I really am enjoying your blog more and more as you explore these new avenues of creativity. I don’t sew stuffed animals- I sew but not that well- and yet this has been such a pleasure to read. Thanks…

Pray tell, how did your 4yo become obsessed with the Gadsden Flag. This is surely a good story. I too am enjoying the custom plush.

When Heidi told me about the plush logos, I couldn’t figure it out. Now, obviously, I get it. And I’m wondering how one goes about commissioning one. But even more seductive, the children’s art. I have boxes of the stuff and have wanted to do quilts for the kids out of their drawings for decades, but I ran dry with the quilting thing – such an investment of time – and have gone to small things instead. I’m thinking about scanning all the art and then doing Blurb hardback books for each child of his/her stuff. The snake is delicious.

    Hi Kristen,
Thank you! In the spring I will start taking custom orders for both plush logos and toys from children's drawings! I hope you check back in a few months!
    Best,
    Abby

    AHHHH-MAZING (:
Your are going to succeed in this business! Another softie maker is up to 563 orders and had to stop orders for time being! I’d love to get into it but I live on a teeny island in Alaska with no store for supplies ): One day maybe.
But ill be checking back & for now ill be having my 3 year old make a lot of drawing to pick from (:
    Goodluck in the business!
