An Article in Modern Patchwork About Violet Craft

December 15, 2015

Modern Patchwork Cover

I’m really excited to have a feature article in the winter edition of Modern Patchwork magazine which is just hitting newsstands now. My piece is on Violet Craft and the story behind her stunning paper pieced lion quilt.

Like many of you, I follow Quilt Market carefully on Instagram. As I look at all of the visual candy I try to think carefully about what I’m seeing. What are people reacting to? What’s the buzz about this time around? At spring Market the buzz seemed to focus on this incredible quilt which featured a portrait of a lion done all in red. The quilt hung in the Michael Miller booth and when I talked to Kait Witte, who handles Michael Miller’s social media accounts, she told me that the photo of this quilt got the most likes on Instagram of anything she’s ever posted.

Right around the time of spring Market I wrote this post about how I’d recently taken on some freelance writing (despite having a terrible high school education). I sent out a link to it in my newsletter and the editor at Modern Patchwork wrote back to me asking if I might like to write some articles for them. I was thrilled! As part of my effort to get some freelance writing jobs I’d gone out and bought all of the quilting magazines on the rack at Barnes and Noble both to see what kinds of articles they featured and to see where I might fit in. Modern Patchwork and Generation Q were my favorite (I ended up writing an article about Penny Gold’s quilt for Gen Q).

I pitched several ideas to the editor at Modern Patchwork and she chose the piece about Violet Craft’s quilt. It was a pleasure to interview Violet back in August and learn more about how this piece came to be. It’s a dramatic story and was really fun to write. I submitted the piece in September and I can’t wait to get a copy of the magazine now!

Go here to preview the projects inside the winter issue of Modern Patchwork (including an exclusive project designed by Violet) and pick up a copy where ever you buy crafty magazines.
