How We Handle Kids’ Allowances

August 31, 2010

We decided that the beginning of first grade was the right time for Roxanne to begin to get an allowance.  She has become increasingly interested in having her own spending money and in figurine out what things cost.  A few months ago she spotted a mermaid figuring at a toy store in Dedham that she has been pining for, hoping to pair it with the Poseidon figurine she got for her birthday.

Along with an allowance has come an expectation that she will perform some household chores.  Although the allowance is not payment for those chores, we have the expectation that she will now complete them as she benefits from her weekly $1.  So she now has to make her bed every morning and every Sunday she has to refill the toilet paper canisters in all three bathrooms.  She takes her new jobs very seriously, at least for now.

I wanted Roxanne to have her own little wallet to keep hold her money when she eventually has saved up enough to go to the toy store.  I decided to make the No Cash wallet from Amy's first book. It came together in about 20 minutes and I got to use a precious vintage fabric scrap and a bakelite button.

It's already got her first week's dollar, plus some tooth fairy money and a two dollar bill from grandpa.

So sweet! I love the color. I think that $1 a week is the perfect amount for a little girl. The mermaid doll is attainable, yet she will still really appreciate it when she saves up enough $.
