Raptor with Torn Fabric

May 28, 2008

DSCN0010

I was suddenly struck the other day

DSCN0011

when I saw this image on Flickr of a soft bird with looped ribbon tail feathers

DSCN0009

that I could make wings for my birds with loops of torn fabric. When I was making horses I made the manes and the tails by sewing together loops made from torn strips of fabric, so why not modify that idea for wing feathers?

I used lots and lots of black thread on this one, with loose tangles of threads from sewing and from tearing all mixed together.  I felt so free working on this.

The feet on this bird are so authentic. Don’t know what gave you the idea to wrap them with thread like that, but that is exactly what raptor feet look like. (I used to work with raptors at a wildlife rehabilitaiton clinic).

It makes me think of bird nests, and how their nests can look – strands of this and that hanging…adds a nice reference and dimension.

The torn fabric and hanging threads are brilliant, Abby. What a gorgeous result you got from them!
