Today is May 7, 2013, the official release date of my new
book, Stuffed Animals: From Concept to Construction! I have been waiting for this day for a very
long time.
Way back in the spring of 2009 I began dreaming of writing a book
that would be a comprehensive guide to designing and sewing stuffed animals and
now that book is on shelves in bookstores nationwide. I’m so grateful to you
guys, my blog readers, for all of your ideas and support along the way. Many of
you were here when I wrote the Elements of Soft Toy Design series a few years
ago. Your enthusiastic response to those posts gave me to confidence to forge
ahead with the book proposal and helped me prove to big name publishers that
there was indeed an audience for a book like this.
To say thank you to you, and to celebrate today, I’ve put
together two giveaway packages that I think will be delightful for any softie
maker to receive. Here’s the scoop:
The Ram Package
Everything you’ll need, and more, to make the Ram from
Stuffed Animals. Here’s a 30 second video clip that explains a bit more about
the Ram.
Ram Featurette from Stuffed Animals from Abby Glassenberg on Vimeo.
He’s so fun to make and you’ll pick up some neat skills
along the way, too. This package contains:
-an autographed copy of Stuffed Animals
-two pairs of 12mm safety eyes in light blue from 6060 eyes
on Etsy
-one yard of Sherpa Faux Fur in Oatmeal from Shannon Fabrics
-one yard of wool-blend felt in white from National
Nonwovens
-one yard of wool-blend felt in gray from National Nonwovens
-a pair of my favorite hemostats (the kind with the curved
tip and ridges)
The Hippo Package
Everything you’ll need, and more, to make the Hippo from
Stuffed Animals. I don’t have a special video clip for the hippo, but you can
seem him really well in the trailer.
Stuffed Animals Book Trailer from Abby Glassenberg on Vimeo.
Learn to design a softie with an open mouth and do some
needle sculpting while you make this guy. This package contains:
-an autographed copy of Stuffed Animals
-a wool felt ball and wool-blend felt scraps in blue and
black to make the hippo’s eyes
-one yard of Cuddle fabric in silver from Shannon Fabrics
-one yard of wool-blend felt in cotton candy pink from
National Nonwovens
-one yard of wool-blend felt in white from National
Nonwovens
-a pair of my favorite hemostats (the kind with the curved
tip and ridges)
Sweet, right? These are all top quality materials and
there’s enough in each package to make many, many softies. Thank you so much to
Shannon Fabrics, National Nonwovens, and 6060 for donating these amazing
supplies. All three of these companies have been incredibly generous and supportive of softie makers and using their products is a total pleasure.
My goal with this book is to provide all the tricks and
techniques you’ll need to design your own softies so leave me a comment telling
me what kind of stuffed animals you’re dreaming of designing.
Please be sure that I have your correct email address and
please only leave one comment. If you have a correction or something more to
say, just email me directly. Open to everyone, including international entries.
I’ll draw two names at random on Friday, May 10 at 1:00 pm Eastern and send you
one of the two packages (I get to choose who gets what).
Thank you so much!

Your ram is soooo cute! I would love to make softies for little ones that crinkle when they squeeze them, but not in an annoying “I’m going to have to take that away from you” kind of way (like I have to do with my dog and her squeaky toys!) :o)

I can’t wait to have a look inside your book!
I am dreaming of designing a line of very funny, huggable, baby-friendly monsters and strange creatues.
All the best,

Congrats on the book release!

I am planning to make some dog toys for my soon-to-be grandpuppy! I’m thinking that toys made of old denim would hold up well. I’ll probably start with simple “biscuit” or “bone” shaped toys, and see where I go from there.
Renee says
Hi Abby, congrats on the book! It looks fantastic! I cannot wait till it arrives at my doorstep! At the moment I am completely in love with felt and textured materials as well as animals looking quite ‘dapper’ in a suit. I have an image in my mind of a walrus actually, with no ideas on how to tackle it. I know your book will give me great insight!! I have no children yet (hopefully soon though!!) so my excuse is that I just love to create!!! Xxx Renee from Aus 🙂

Gratia says
Wonderful giveaway. If I had to choose one thing that I’m dying to make, it would be a raptor. That’s what my friends call me because I’m short and prone to nipping people. I don’t have your book yet but I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy. It just looks so amazing.
Kim@floatingthrufields says
YAY your book is finally coming out!!! I’m so excited!!! Your little ram is the cutest thing EVER!! What a beautiful giveaway, thanks Abby ! I hesitated participating because I am not sure I can wait 3 days to order your book (I never win giveaways ) …I will read it and I want to design something special. I will design a giant softie to sit on our too modern to my taste sofa. I need something stylish because I want it to stay on the sofa, something fun to delight my son, and a bit quirky to surprise my hubby. To keep the element of surprise I need to be able to sew it fats…it’s complicated !! Anyway, good luck ladies with this beautiful giveaway!

Congratulations on your newest book! I would love to make stuffed animals that are sturdy and safe for my two littlest grandchildren (2 & 5 mo., respectively). The two yr. old is currently fascinated with lions, penguins, beavers and dragons, though she’s an animal lover, so any domestic animals would be a big hit with her as well. Andrea says
I’ve been thinking of making several different kinds of fish, like a pike, trout, cod, salmon and so on. But it’s still a puzzle to me how to actually make these different from each other so they don’t all look like “it’s a fish … right?!” (as happened to me with two cats I sewed after a pattern in a book – “Oh, these are cats?! I thought they were… ehm, ehh, bears maybe?” LOL – I love them anyway, and so do my twins). And (probably a lot more difficult, I assume) a moose would be wonderful, maybe also a family of wild boars, a couple of mushrooms, some little berry bushes and trees – a whole little forest scenery for my boys to play with…
Anne says
What a fab giveaway! I’d love to design some dinosaurs – both my boys love them to bits!

First, I’m chomping at the bit to make that adorable ram! Second, I’ve been dreaming of creating a likeness of the dashing red fox spotted in a nearby forest on my morning walks. I have already purchased your book and it is wonderful! I think if I were to design a softie it would be an adorable panda bear wearing a big red ribbon just like one I had as a child. All the projects in your book are interesting but if I had to pick a favorite it would be the puppy. He looks curious and I wonder what he is thinking! I would love to win a copy of your book and I would gift it to my sister or girlfriend. Thank you for sharing your work with others!

I think I need to design a steering wheel softie. My son is somewhat obsessed. Cars are great, but steering wheels? The. Best.

I can’t wait to read your book and thanks for the giveaway! I want to make a cow softie and if I didn’t know you were about to come out with a horse pattern, I would say a horse. My kids are horse crazy! 🙂

I am so excited this book is finally available! I became a follower during your how to design a softie series. I’ve always wanted to sew softies for my boys, but I want something unique and a little crazy. There just aren’t patterns for that kind of stuff (at least not many) so I’m so excited to try out your book and learn how to design what I have in mind. Thank you for all your hard work and effort you’ve put into this book.

After reading your Elements of a Stuffed Toy series I had the courage to design Harry (of Harry the Dirty Dog) for my son and a dinosaur for a friend’s baby. I would love to make a Curious George or Little Brown Bear for my son, but I have no idea where to start. I can’t wait to get your book. Thanks for writing it!!

Ever since I made my daughter your lovely daschund she’s been bugging me to make her a cat. I haven’t located a cat pattern I love for sale, so I am hoping that with the help of your book I can modify a pattern I own to create a kitten for her.

Topsy- turvy dolls have always intrigued me. I would like to design toys that have a topsy-turvy theme, for example cat and mouse. i also have a desire to design a very specific type of owl. Now that I am really thinking about it, I want to design a Raven also. Now look what you have done! You’ve got me all excited.

Yay it is finally coming! I can’t wait for this book.
I want to design my own dinosaurs (not just t-rex), and all kinds of local animals like squirrels, raccoons, deer, bears, etc.
Congrats on another fabulous publication! I am crossing my fingers for an autographed treat!

I bought my 4 yr old grandson a “Puff the Magic Dragon” book. He loves it and can sing the whole song! I’d like to design and make him his own Puff!

Lions and tigers and bears…..oh my! Thanks for the chance to win. The bunnies I made for Easter for my grandkids could have looked better ( they love them of course) but I sure would like to be able to do the hand stitching better.

I love all animals….love making soft toys. My mother, who passed away 12 years ago was called Granny Frog. I have a blanket that was hers and want to make a frog for each of her grandkids so they have something of hers. I just have not found the right Frog to make. So that is my dream—-frog

I’d love to make a seahorse, or a narwhal. Something from the sea that’s almost fantasy, which both of those creatures are for me! If you asked my son it’d be sheep and monkeys and maybe a dog or two.

My ultimate goal is to create softies based on my son’s drawings – in particular a shark that he created when he was 4. I am a pretty advanced sewer but have never attempted a softie. I would love to learn the basics of softie making before attempting my own design!

Drrrrooooooooooooooooooollllllllll!am in love with that book,Abby…I want it so very badly…am dying over it.The kind of softies I would want to make?Realistic and yet cute, with their own personalities that would make a child squeal in delight, love, hug, sleep with it and when the little boy or girl grows up,linger in their hearts as only the memories of a favorite toy can.

Hi Abby I’ve always wanted to learn to sew stuffed critters but have been a little afraid I’m not one to jump in. I’ve gotten braver sewing clothing for my Grandkids. Quilts with curves are no problem but animals dont end up looking like animals from Earth. Now I have a Grandson who just loves elephants and giraffe’s and I think with your book I could become a super achiever! Thanks for the opportunity to recieve a wonderful gift! Congrats!

We are really into sea life in our house. I really want to make an octopus!

Love the Ram Abby! The book looks great, well done. I’ve never made a stuffed plush before (normally a needle felted animal maker!) but really want to have a go and would make a hare to start :)Thanks!

I love sewing and crafting of all sorts! I dream of making dragons, LOTS and LOTS of dragons. Maybe a Star Whale or two, an OOD, a few adipose, and other misc Doctor Who type things.
