Today is May 7, 2013, the official release date of my new
book, Stuffed Animals: From Concept to Construction! I have been waiting for this day for a very
long time.
Way back in the spring of 2009 I began dreaming of writing a book
that would be a comprehensive guide to designing and sewing stuffed animals and
now that book is on shelves in bookstores nationwide. I’m so grateful to you
guys, my blog readers, for all of your ideas and support along the way. Many of
you were here when I wrote the Elements of Soft Toy Design series a few years
ago. Your enthusiastic response to those posts gave me to confidence to forge
ahead with the book proposal and helped me prove to big name publishers that
there was indeed an audience for a book like this.
To say thank you to you, and to celebrate today, I’ve put
together two giveaway packages that I think will be delightful for any softie
maker to receive. Here’s the scoop:
The Ram Package

The Hippo Package
Everything you’ll need, and more, to make the Hippo from
Stuffed Animals. I don’t have a special video clip for the hippo, but you can
seem him really well in the trailer.

Learn to design a softie with an open mouth and do some
needle sculpting while you make this guy. This package contains:
-an autographed copy of Stuffed Animals
-a wool felt ball and wool-blend felt scraps in blue and
black to make the hippo’s eyes
-one yard of Cuddle fabric in silver from Shannon Fabrics
-one yard of wool-blend felt in cotton candy pink from
National Nonwovens
-one yard of wool-blend felt in white from National

-a pair of my favorite hemostats (the kind with the curved

Sweet, right? These are all top quality materials and
there’s enough in each package to make many, many softies. Thank you so much to

My goal with this book is to provide all the tricks and
techniques you’ll need to design your own softies so leave me a comment telling

Just yesterday, I was telling my husband and sister how I wanted to make a cute tiny ram with large horns as my first project! It is so awesome that it is one of the projects! Either way, congratulations on the book and I cannot wait to get started on some projects!
I’ve been planning on making a “mad cow” and a “swine flu” plush when I was out of a job back in 2009. I even started prototyping on the swine, but never got to actually making it, ’cause, you know, I did find a job. But yeah…

I have been looking forward to the release of this book. I’ve been making plush dolls for a while and been wanting to make my own patterns. For me, I am a geek crafter, so I could be making some of my favorite fantasy creatures.

I also want to make animals in active positions; the one I’m sketching right now is a stretching cat. Hi Abby – congratulations on the release of your new book! I can’t wait to read it and work through the projects. I loving making toys for my kids (and their friends, family and pretty much anyone I know who would appreciate at soft toy!). At the moment I have a design for a crocodile in mind so that would be the first softie i would design and make. I also have many other ideas that I would love to see develop too.

Oh, my goodness, both the ram and the hippo are adorable. I have this book on my wishlist. I think it would be a huge amount of fun to desing sea creatures. I’d probably start with something simpler, like a sea star, but would love to be able to do jellyfish and a variety of little fish … and maybe even strange things like corals.

I am planning to make some dog toys for my soon-to-be grandpuppy! I’m thinking that toys made of old denim would hold up well. I’ll probably start with simple “biscuit” or “bone” shaped toys, and see where I go from there.

A tiger …. Not very unusual but my daughter LOVES tigers and it would be lovely to make her her very own unique tiger.
I would make a teddy bear with a viking costume if I had the skills. I have a problem with gussets, because I’m such a newbie at sewing. Can’t wait to read your book, so I can get a better grasp at proper construction techniques.

I would make microbes and other model organisms, like fruit flies and planaria. And cell parts, anatomical models… it’s be fun cause they’re kinda abstract- you’re not interfering with someone’s idea of what a Golgi apparatus should be 🙂

I’ve been thinking of making several different kinds of fish, like a pike, trout, cod, salmon and so on. But it’s still a puzzle to me how to actually make these different from each other so they don’t all look like “it’s a fish … right?!” (as happened to me with two cats I sewed after a pattern in a book – “Oh, these are cats?! I thought they were… ehm, ehh, bears maybe?” LOL – I love them anyway, and so do my twins). And (probably a lot more difficult, I assume) a moose would be wonderful, maybe also a family of wild boars, a couple of mushrooms, some little berry bushes and trees – a whole little forest scenery for my boys to play with…

Oddly enough, considering the prize you are offering, I’ve been dreaming of making a hippo for a while now. (My husband loves hippos.) I am also trying to perfect a pattern for a horse. Gussets are something I am still finding tricky! I can’t wait to read your new book!
I’ve never been good at sewing, so I think I would start with monsters/aliens and once I’m better I would try a (2-humped) camel or any animal but in pink or purple.

I have already purchased your book and it is wonderful! I think if I were to design a softie it would be an adorable panda bear wearing a big red ribbon just like one I had as a child. All the projects in your book are interesting but if I had to pick a favorite it would be the puppy. He looks curious and I wonder what he is thinking! I would love to win a copy of your book and I would gift it to my sister or girlfriend. Thank you for sharing your work with others!
I think I need to design a steering wheel softie. My son is somewhat obsessed. Cars are great, but steering wheels? The. Best.

I am so excited this book is finally available! I became a follower during your how to design a softie series. I’ve always wanted to sew softies for my boys, but I want something unique and a little crazy. There just aren’t patterns for that kind of stuff (at least not many) so I’m so excited to try out your book and learn how to design what I have in mind. Thank you for all your hard work and effort you’ve put into this book.
After reading your Elements of a Stuffed Toy series I had the courage to design Harry (of Harry the Dirty Dog) for my son and a dinosaur for a friend’s baby. I would love to make a Curious George or Little Brown Bear for my son, but I have no idea where to start. I can’t wait to get your book. Thanks for writing it!!

Ever since I made my daughter your lovely daschund she’s been bugging me to make her a cat. I haven’t located a cat pattern I love for sale, so I am hoping that with the help of your book I can modify a pattern I own to create a kitten for her.
Topsy- turvy dolls have always intrigued me. I would like to design toys that have a topsy-turvy theme, for example cat and mouse. i also have a desire to design a very specific type of owl. Now that I am really thinking about it, I want to design a Raven also. Now look what you have done! You’ve got me all excited.

I love all animals….love making soft toys. My mother, who passed away 12 years ago was called Granny Frog. I have a blanket that was hers and want to make a frog for each of her grandkids so they have something of hers. I just have not found the right Frog to make. So that is my dream—-frog

I’d love to make a seahorse, or a narwhal. Something from the sea that’s almost fantasy, which both of those creatures are for me! If you asked my son it’d be sheep and monkeys and maybe a dog or two.
My ultimate goal is to create softies based on my son’s drawings – in particular a shark that he created when he was 4. I am a pretty advanced sewer but have never attempted a softie. I would love to learn the basics of softie making before attempting my own design!

Hi Abby I’ve always wanted to learn to sew stuffed critters but have been a little afraid I’m not one to jump in. I’ve gotten braver sewing clothing for my Grandkids. Quilts with curves are no problem but animals dont end up looking like animals from Earth. Now I have a Grandson who just loves elephants and giraffe’s and I think with your book I could become a super achiever! Thanks for the opportunity to recieve a wonderful gift! Congrats!

I love sewing and crafting of all sorts! I dream of making dragons, LOTS and LOTS of dragons. Maybe a Star Whale or two, an OOD, a few adipose, and other misc Doctor Who type things.
