My guests on this episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast are Cal Patch and Jen Beeman.

Cal Patch has been a maker since she was a Girl Scout in the seventies. She sews, crochets, spins, embroiders, knits, prints, drafts patterns, dyes… hence the name of her label: hodge podge.

Cal has taught all of these subjects for nearly 15 years and currently travels around the US teaching at retreats like Squam Art Workshops, the Makerie, Lucky Star Art Camp, Shakerag and Fiber College, as well as local shops and online with Creativebug. Her specialty is teaching people that they really can make their own clothes that actually fit!

After seventeen years of being a New York City dweller, in 2009 Cal relocated to the Catskills where she is becoming a crafty farmer. Her first book, Design-It-Yourself Clothes: Patternmaking Simplified, is out from Potter Craft. You can see what she’s up to at her blog, hodge podge farm.

Jennifer Beeman is the designer and patternmaker behind Grainline Studio, a line of sewing patterns featuring modern, fashion-forward patterns that will fit seamlessly into your everyday wardrobe. Jen studied fashion design at Columbia College where she focused on patternmaking & technical design and began working as a patternmaker just prior to graduating until recently when she stopped to focus on Grainline Studio full time.

In addition to running Grainline Studio, she now teaches at Columbia College Chicago in the fashion department. For tips, tricks, tutorials, and sewing inspiration follow along with the Grainline Studio blog or peek in behind the scenes of running a small pattern company by following Grainline Studio on Instagram.

Cal and Jen trace their journeys from studying fashion design in college to becoming successful creative business owners. We talk about sewing clothes, pattern making, and how home sewing is changing. It’s a terrific conversation.

We also recommend great stuff we’re loving right now.

If you enjoy the show, tell a friend about it! Happy listening.
