Inspired by the drawings of the boat-tailed grackle in our Sibley guide
I did some sketching of smaller birds.
I like the long tail on this bird, but not the dark colors. I’m in a bit of an orange phase right now.
Same vintage necktie for the wings as on the goldfish belly. It looks both like fish scales and like feathers to me (and its got the orange).
Long tail feathers with interfacing inside to make them stiff. I think they could be a bit stiffer, even. The bird is pictured here on a really nice piece of blue and white fabric from Mimi who came to see my show today (without me because both Roxanne and Stella have ear infections) and then came over for a chat and some freshly baked bread. We always have so much fun together.
Wow is it easier to make a shorter bird! This one just stood up and balanced instantly. A satisfying project.

Sweet!!
Any pointers for the wire legs? I posted an owl I made with wire feet. They don’t look too bad from far away, but up close are horrendous!!

Oh, wow. I thought I knew love when you posted your large birds, but I think I’m even more in love with the little one. The tail feathers are awesome.

Another beauty! I’m sorry to hear the girls have been sick but I’m so glad you got to enjoy Mimi’s company – she seems like such a nice person 🙂

I have been reading your blog for a long time and I love to see how your toys have evolved. You are really an amazing artist. I had to do a project for school once identifying and photographing floridian birds and there were sooo many boat tailed grackles 🙂 There are so many beauties to choose from. I’d say good luck but you don’t really need it!

I found your blog through another crafty one I visit (don’t remember which one) and I love your beautiful birds! I am a bird nerd (and love my Sibley’s :)) and it’s so wonderful that your art is inspired by nature. Just lovely!

Hi, I just stumbled upon your website through the softie awards. Ha, ha, I can relate to the smaller birds balancing better. I’ve tried both and had the same problem. 🙂
