On today’s episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast we’re talking about building a career as a designer with my guest, Christine Ricks.

Christine is the Creative Director for Missouri Star Quilt Company’s publishing department, working with a team to design and produce their magazine, Block. She’s trained as a graphic designer and has taken up quilting as another medium to express her creative self. Christine spent the 10 years prior to her current position working in surface pattern design and contributing to several fabric lines for BasicGrey produced by Moda. She also contributes to the Modern Quilt Guild’s Quilt of the month and served as president of the Salt Lake Modern Quilt Guild last year.

We trace the history of Block magazine and Christine explains how she got hired at Missouri Star. Learn what makes Block unique from other quilting magazines currently on the market and get a taste of what’s to come.

Christine takes us back to her days working at BasicGrey at the height of scrapbooking boom and discusses what made that company stand out. She also explains how to submit your quilt ideas to the Modern Quilt Guild for consideration as a quilt of the month project. Christine lives in Salt Lake City and gives us a taste of the quilting and hiking scenes there.

And, of course, I ask Christine to recommend great stuff she’s enjoying right now. Christine recommends:
