On today’s episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast I’m talking with Elizabeth Duvivier, the founder and director of Squam Art Workshops.
Elizabeth founded Squam in 2008 after being enchanted with her experience at Artfest and wanting to create something similar on the East Coast. Squam has since become a premier art retreat attracting top instructors in knitting, sewing, fibers, mixed media, writing, and art-making.
Taking place over four days in the spring and again in the fall amidst the stunning setting of Squam Lake, New Hampshire, attendees relax, connect, learn new skills, and rejuvenate their creative spirits. Many find the experience of Squam to be so special, and so personal, that it’s hard to put into words.
Elizabeth talks about the work she does to creates the atmosphere at Squam. She explains her process of selecting instructors and what she’s learned over the last six years about what it takes to run a successful art retreat.
We mention:
- On Golden Pond, which was filmed on Squam Lake
- Artfest
- Squam Lakes Conservation Society
And, of course, Elizabeth and I recommend great stuff we’re enjoying right now. Elizabeth recommends:

I grew up this area of NH and this sounds amazing! I am currently in a small town in Maine and understand the need to find “others” who understand the creative side of you. Elizabeth, I love how you created something that brought them to you. Abby I just want to thank you for taking the time to create these podcasts. I have begun my own crafting business this fall and I love sitting down to a project in my studio and listening to these. The podcasts have been immensely helpful, entertaining and something that I look forward to. They have been an education in themselves. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for listening, Rebecca!
