What makes a craft conference great?

How can you create a truly transformative, relaxing, and inspiring experience for a broad range of attendees?

Today on the Craft Industry Alliance podcast I’m talking with two women who have the experience and understanding to answer these questions. Nicole Stevenson and Delilah Snell are the organizers of Craftcation, a craft and business conference that takes place in Ventura, California each spring. They also organize a series of indie craft fairs called Patchwork Show.

Nicole is actually Delilah’s niece and they were childhood playmates.

Nicole is a painter and creative writer. She’s held a variety of jobs including working as a street artist on the Venice Beach boardwalk, designing costumes in Hollywood, and owning and designing a clothing line. She now has an illustration company, Show and Tell Design Studio.

Delilah has a background in community projects and fine food. She’s a master of food preservation, she’s owned a retail store and a food business. She’s now a wedding consultant.

Today, Delilah and Nicole work together to produce Craftcation and Patchwork Show and they have tremendous wisdom and insight to share about bringing people in the craft industry together for shared experiences, learning, and growth.

In our conversation we talk about:

  • knowing when you’ve got a great idea, and knowing when to quit
  • dividing up tasks in a business partnership
  • pitching an idea with confidence
  • what to do when things don’t go as planned
  • what we can look forward to at the Craftcation conference in March 2015 (see a list of presenters here)

And, of course, we recommend great stuff we’re enjoying right now, including:

Registration for Craftcation is now open. The conference will be from March 26-29 and the hotel is nearly filled up so act soon. I’ll be there teaching several workshops, and taking several more, and I’d love to meet you! Get more details right here. And Delilah and Nicole blog at Dear Handmade Life.
